Marine

HMS Daring, the first of a new class of destroyers for the British Royal Navy, has been fitted with fire safety systems manufactured by Beele Engineering. These systems are used for the firesafe, shock resistant and water and gas tight sealing of 3,500 cable and pipe penetrations as well as penetrations for hydraulic lines and ventilation ducts.

HMS Daring is a new type of warship. The vessel, considered to be the world’s most advanced destroyer, successfully completed her first sea trials recently. With a length of 152.4 metres and a displacement of 7,350 tons, the new destroyer is considerably larger than its predecessors. The Type 45 is designed for missions of 45 days, and has a range of about 7,000 nautical miles at a speed of 18 knots; her maximum speed is 29 knots.

The choice for equipment on board of the new destroyers is based on through-life cost, which means that total cost of ownership over the entire life of the destroyer is taken as yardstick for this purpose. Beele Engineering’s RISE system and plugs satisfy this criterion. The RISE system is used for the firesafe, shock resistant and water and gas tight sealing of cable, pipe and multi-pipe penetrations. RISE is also applied on a large scale for sealing hydraulic lines as well as ventilation ducts. All single-pipe and small-diameter pipe penetrations are sealed with Beele’s plugs.

The Royal Navy’s newest warship, the Type 45 Destroyer HMS Dauntless is fully equipped with RISE and sealing plugs of Beele Engineering. This continues the strong relationship we have with the Royal Navy having worked on all of their new build projects since 1999. Projects included the LPD, AO and Astute vessels built by BAE Systems in Barrow and the River Class vessels built by VT Shipbuilding in Portsmouth.

HMS Dauntless is the second of the new Type 45 class of Anti-Air Warfare Destroyers. The type 45s are some of the most powerful destroyers ever built for the Royal Navy Ð they can sail over 600 miles a day and operate around the globe. Dauntless will support global offensive and peacekeeping operations, combat drug smugglers and deliver humanitarian aid. The full range of CSD products has been extensively tested under the most extreme conditions, to prove their suitability for surface ships and submarine applications, offering a lightweight space efficient solution and guaranteeing the highest level of safety for Naval vessels and their personnel.

The level of integration of our products not only in new build but also in to the Royal Navy’s maintenance program is highlighted by the news that HMS Sultan has decided to put training of the installation of RISE systems into the syllabus. HMS Sultan is the home of the Royal Naval School of Marine Engineering and their primary function is to supply the fleet with Engineering Officers of the highest quality.

The 11,000 dwt sulphur/bitumen tanker FS Charlotte is one of the few -if not the only- triple-hulled tankers in existence. Designed by Istanbul based Delta Marine Co and built by Yardimci Shipyards, FS Charlotte can trade two different cargoes thanks to its entirely seperated cargo systems. As well as having a double hull, FS Charlotte also has a void space to isolate the cargo from ballast tanks. In this way it is possible to carry cargo without any heating for at least seven days.

The cargo tanks are fully independent of the hull structure, and mounted on ULEPSI tank supports of BEELE Engineering to allow expansion of the cargo at high temperatures and so FS Charlotte is, effectively, a triple-hull ship.

The purpose of the ULEPSI tank support system is to reduce the temperature from around 200 oC to a reasonable level. Further requirements to be met are compressive strength to absorb the weight of the cargo tanks in addition to an optimised coefficient of friction of the various system components.

The revolutionary special-purpose vessel Yacht Express, is designed to operate a fast and frequent service carrying yachts across the Atlantic Ocean. Its service speed of 18 knots will enable the Yacht Express to complete the transatlantic crossing between the Mediterranean and Florida or the Caribbean in not more than ten days. The Yacht Express is the largest vessel of its kind in the world. Firesafe seals for all penetrations carrying cables and plastic pipes have been constructed with the RISE system.

The Yacht Express was built for Dockwise Yacht Transport by Yantai Raffles Shipyard in China. The vessel’s semi-submersible design enables it to accommodate yachts of any size by means of the unique float-on/float-off loading bay. With a length of 209 metres and width of 32 metres, the Yacht Express has a carrying capacity of 5,000 tons and a total deck area of 5,115 square metres. In addition to its cargo of yachts, the vessel can also accommodate 50 crew and on-board riders in considerable luxury. Facilities available on board include a swimming pool, fitness centre and an atrium.

The decision to choose the firesafe RISE sealing system was based among other things on its simplicity of installation. The short installation times which are possible with the RISE system ensure substantial cost savings on installation not only during the shipbuilding stage itself but also at vessel refits and conversions. Apart from providing seals that are fire resistant as well as smoke, gas and water tight, the system is also very maintenance friendly, and enlargements or modifications of cable sets can be performed without detriment to fire safety. Furthermore, the RISE system is designed to cater for both cable and pipe penetrations, which means that one single system is sufficient to seal all types of transit openings.

Ease of installation and flexibility. Those two criteria played an important role when a fire safe sealing system had to be chosen for the drillbarge M/V Christine I. This unique drilling platform was designed and build for operation in the Panama Canal by shipyard De Donge. The pontoon has 4 stabilizing spuds, a wheelhouse to operate the drill and a complete accommodation.

Today’s cost effectiveness requires a system that can be used with a minimum of pre-engineering. The RISE system is such a system: no special conduit frames have to be used, there are no restrictions on cable types and sizes, insulation in front of the penetration is not needed ánd the system can be used for the shortest possible conduit length.

The system offers the most simple way of installation while the very limited amount of components makes it easy to handle on site. RISE can be used both for vertical (deck) and horizontal (bulkhead) conduit openings. The sealing system allows cables to be ducted through conduit openings in a bent, curved or oblique way. Without any adverse impact on the sealing performance. Reasons enough for shipyard De Donge to use RISE on board the drill barge. Interested in the RISE system? On behalf of Stolt Tankers the Chinese Xinshun Shipyard is currently building two new bitumen tankers. The ships are built with independent cargo tanks, which rest on ULEPSI supports.
ULEPSI tank supports are designed for application on board carriers for the transport of products which have to be maintained at a high temperature level. The purpose of the ULEPSI tank support system is to reduce the temperature from around 200 oC to a reasonable level.
Apart from its temperature-reducing function, the ULEPSI tank support system is also specifically designed for compressive strength, which is necessary to be able to absorb the great weight of the cargo tanks.

Oil and gas

Both SLIPSIL sealing plugs and the fire safe RISE system are used for sealing all the pipe penetrations including GRE and plastic pipes in the accomodation platforms destined for the offshore Al Shaheen Field, Block 5, Qatar. The work is carried out by Lowestoft based SLP Engineering Ltd. on behalf of Maersk Oil Qatar AS. The work comprises one accomodation platform for 119 men, one accomodation platform for 89 men, 4 accomodation platforms each for 36 men as well as interconnecting bridges.

The RISE metallic and plastic pipe sealing system, is one of the most adaptive systems for sealing all pipe penetrations including excentrical and angled pipe penetrations. The few materials and components that are required for the RISE system make installation very quick and easy. SLIPSIL, the new generation sealing plugs, is designed to provide fire safe and gas and water tight seals for transits carrying single or multiple plastic or metal pipes. Compared to other sealing plugs the SLIPSIL plug is even easier to install. The plugs can already be exposed to high pressures immediately after installation.

NORIRNO was chosen by McDermott Dubai for the firewall penetrations on board Maersk’s BD & DC platform. NOFIRNO is one of BEELE Engineering’s ‘rapid sealing systems’ for use on board ships, on offshore installations, in building and construction and other environments where the safety of people and installations has to be guaranteed. NOFIRNO offers the ultimate fire safe sealing solution for metallic and plastic pipes. Even combined penetrations for metal and plastic pipes as well as cables can be sealed effectively. That means that one sealing system can be used for all types of penetrations.

The RISE system is used across this site on building entry and outbound cable ducting for water and gastight seals.

ACTIFOAM is used for fire boundaries within buildings. 2 hour Fire rated penetrations with gastight seal.

NOFIRNO boards are installed to protect the control and IT rooms of a plywood factory in Chile from fire. NOFIRNO mineral boards offer a very economic solution for the sealing of larger open spaces in conduit openings. The boards are coated with a layer of NOFIRNO. In case of fire the NOFIRNO coating will form a ceramic protective shield at the exposed side. It prevents moisture from escaping from the inside of the mineral wool board so that no shrinkage will occur during fire exposure. NOFIRNO boards have been successfully tested during a 90 min fire test according to the European standard EN 1366-3:2004 (determination of the fire resistance of a cable penetration through an aerated concrete wall).

To prevent the advanced and sensitive telecom equipment, Dutch telecom operator KPN Telecom has used FIRSTO fire stops for its technical rooms. The system was chosen because of its flexibility and garanteed fire integrity: the number of cable mutation is high but may never influence the fire safety. The FIRSTO cable tray fire stops are developed as a modular system which is simple to assemble around the cable run against the wall or on the floor. Working in inaccessible openings is often cumbersome. With FIRSTO this is a thing of the past.

The system is not only easy to install, but also makes it simple to add or remove cables at a later stage. All that needs to be done is to remove the cover, lift out the top layer (or layers) of firesafe ACTIFOAM rubber, add or remove the cables, and then close the firestop again. What could be simpler? The firestop prevents the spread of smoke and fire, and can withstand heavy mechanical loads. The FIRSTO firestop solution supports any cable size and quantity. It can be Installed before or after tray and cable.
FIRSTO is nontoxic, the materials are chemically-neutral and contain no halogens, formaldehyde or asbestos. Its high quality design is also proved by the fact that it can be used in nearly any environment e.g. hazardous, interior or exterior, dry or wet.

Public transport

In order to be able to meet the high standards applied with regard to fire safety in the Central Artery Tunnel in Boston (U.S.), all the electrical boxes and panels are sealed by means of the RISE system. The system combines optimized fire safety with speed of use and simplicity of material management.

Boston’s Central Artery Tunnel forms part of one of the most complex and technologically advanced projects ever undertaken in America’s highway engineering history. The project, known as the ‘Big Dig’, was intended to provide a solution for the traffic congestion which plagues the city of Boston. The existing elevated six lane highway – the Central Artery – was replaced by an underground highway with eight or ten lanes: the Central Artery Tunnel. The Central Artery, which intersects Boston’s city centre and suburbs, was used by around 200,000 vehicles daily. This made it one of the busiest highways in the United States. The annual cost of the traffic jams caused by that volume of traffic were estimated at US $ 500 million. What is more, that figure disregards the fact that part of the city is cut off by the highway and hampered in its participation in the general economic activity. The Central Artery Tunnel was developed to solve these problems. The tunnel is constructed immediately underneath the existing highway, and to the north it opens out into a fourteen lane highway. In addition, to the south of Boston highway I-90 is also undergoing substantial expansion work, which includes a connecting tunnel to the airport. In parallel with these innovations many other improvements are being made to upgrade the road network, a number of them underground as well.

The RISE system which is employed in the Central Artery Tunnel is based on the ACTIFIRE technology developed by Beele Engineering. The purpose of this technology is to allow sealing materials to perform an active fire retardant function during a fire. These materials are sealants that when exposed to high temperatures and/or flames will (massively) expand and thereby produce new fire retardant material. The ACTIFIRE technology is designed to make sure that this fire retardant material is produced in such quantity that the penetration is provided with a completely firesafe seal. At the same time, major deformations or displacements are effortlessly compensated and penetration life in a fire is considerably extended.

As part of the renovation of the passenger terminal of Airport Dubrovnik, Beele Engineering has received an order for the NOFIRNO boards. The mineral wool boards will be used for the fire safe ducting of cables. For separating the cables the NOFIRNO boards are combined with the NOFIRNO insert sleeves. The sleeves are split lenthwise and can be fitted easily around the cables. The NOFIRNO board is sealed all around with NOFIRNO sealant to obtain optimum tightness.

Terminal 5 of Heathrow Airport (London, UK) consist of a main terminal building – which is big enough to accommodate 50 football pitches – 2 satellite buildings, 60 aircraft stands, a new air traffic control tower, a 4000 space multi storey car park, along with all associated infrastructure works, including extensions to the London Underground. One of the early stages of the project was to install the power systems for the site, consisting of a massive sub-station and miles of cabling running through part of the total of 13.5km of tunnelling. In order to prevent water and gas ingress and also to offer fire protection in certain areas, the RISE system was chosen to seal cable entries into the sub station and through building entries into the Terminal itself. Much of this work was carried out by both Scottish and Southern Energy and Laing O’Rourke. Both chose RISE for its simplicity and speed of installation, as well as its proven long term high sealing performance in the most arduous of environments.

Water leakages must be prevented under all circumstances. After all, leaking water means not only a nuisance but in most cases damage as well. Corrosion damage caused by leaking cable and pipe entries runs into hundreds of millions of dollars per year. What is more, leaking entries can also allow gas to penetrate, leading to the potential threat of explosions. Most measures that are taken against water leakage are not 100% effective. For more than 35 years Beele Engineering is specialized in the field of watertightness and today offers a broad range of special-purpose products and systems. One of these systems is the RISWAT system.

The RISWAT systems turned out to be the ultimate sealing solution for transformer stations of the Austrian energy works company EVN Hollabrunn. The concrete stations were flooded with water upto 30 cm in the transformer compartment after every rainfall. As a result the maintenance crew had to pump out the water four times per year. The overcome these problems RISWAT was used. The system was not only applied on new penetrations but also on leaking, existing conduits. More information on the RISWAT system can be found on the website www.riswat.com. Recently Beele Engineering has published a flyer on its watertight sealing solutions.

RISE is being used in the largest onshore Wind Farm in Europe which will be completed this year. Scottish Power’s Whitelee Project Wind Farm will consist of 140 wind turbines generating a total of 322MW of power. That is sufficient to provide electricity to virtually every home in Glasgow – a total of 200,000 homes. The site is located on high ground on Eaglesham Moor south of Glasgow with the turbines located across an area of 7 x 4 miles of moorland and forest. The generated power will prevent emissions of over 650,000 tons of carbon dioxide every year from fossil fuels which would otherwise have to be burned.

Songas, an internationally-owned company that generates electricity using gas that was discovered at Songo Songo island off the coast of southern Tanzania, is using NOFIRNO boards, ACTIFOAM sheets and NOFIRNO sealant for the fire safe sealing of cable penetrations. This is the first delivery to Tanzania – making ground for further expansion in the African region.

The main objective of the NOFIRNO coating is to avoid any release of moisture and vapours from the coated mineral wool boards. Loss of moisture will automatically cause shrinkage of the boards, thereby resulting in loss of mechanical stability during fire exposure. With NOFIRNO, this is not the case and mechanical stability is maintained. NOFIRNO mineral boards offer a very economic solution for the sealing of larger open spaces in conduit openings. The superb NOFIRNO coating offers a high degree of thermal insulation.

Britain’s ultimate high street, Oxford Street, is London’s most popular shopping thoroughfare. Each day 60,000 shoppers walk its pavement in search of that special something, while 9 million tourists visit every year. Now, ACTIFOAM, RISE and NOFIRNO boards have found their way to Oxford Street. The systems are are being used to fire seal the floor slabs in one of the buildings on Oxford Street.

Water and wastewater treatment plants

For a water pumping station of Croatian Waters the NOFIRNO sealing systems has been used for cable penetrations. At least 35 penetrations were sealed with NOFIRNO boards.

Beele’s RISWAT sealing system was used for the sealing of a large water pipe of Vienna’s Water Services. The existing pipe broke and had to be replaced by a new one. The new concrete pipe is connected to a local pump station in an area close to the Donau river that floods frequently. Therefore the penetration opening for the concrete pipe had to be sealed. Because the ducted pipe was not located centrally in the conduit opening, RISWAT was the only system that could do the job. RISWAT is suitable for the sealing of both new and existing cable and pipe transits. This therefore simplifies repairs to existing cable/pipe entries that may have developed a leak.

For the upgrade of Thames Water´s Crossness Sewerage Treatment Works, the RISE Duct Seal was used throughout the plant to seal all of the cable and pipe ducts against water, sewerage and gas ingress. Thames chose the RISE system based on the simple installation but high level of integrity it provided. Furthermore the RISE system will also ensure a high performing gas and water tight seal for a period in excess of 50 years but with the benefit of easily adding or removing cables at anytime in the future. Following the success at Crossness Thames Water also looked to the RISE system to seal all of the cable and pipe ducts at 5 more of their sites including Ashford Common, Beckton and Battersea.
